Active Days Out in Rokiškis

4 min read

Rokiškis is no resort, but there is plenty here to fill an active day. Most of it is in the town itself or right beside it, so a group has nowhere far to drive.

We have arranged it by the weather: what works outdoors, where to go when it rains, and what to do if you want some adrenaline.

The Velniakalnis recreation area is in the town itself, ten minutes from the old town

This is the best place for an afternoon outdoors. Beside the Velniakalnis pond there is a recreation area with outdoor tennis courts, beach volleyball pitches, shelters, outdoor gym equipment and walking paths.

The tennis courts are not ordinary ones. They were the first acrylic-surfaced courts in Lithuania, suitable for professionals and amateurs alike. The site also hosts international tennis and beach volleyball competitions. Using the courts is free.

There are two swimming beaches on the pond: one deeper, one shallower and suited to small children. A path leads from the recreation area towards the Kalvarijos complex, so after a game of volleyball you can go for a walk.

There is a car park on site. Bring your own rackets and balls – there is nowhere to hire them there.

The Rokiškis swimming pool

The best option in bad weather. The pool was built in 2018 and is one of the newer ones in Lithuania. It is small but has everything: a 25 metre pool for adults, a shallow one for children, a large whirlpool and a leisure area.

The relaxation area has four saunas: Finnish, a Lithuanian amber sauna, Turkish and infrared. For a group it is a good place to unwind after a day in town.

Prices are friendly, especially on weekdays. There are family and birthday discounts, and for a school group of ten or more the group leader gets in free.

The pool opens at 13:00 on Mondays, 7:00 on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8:00 on Wednesdays and Fridays and 10:00 at weekends, closing at 22:00. The saunas open later. Hours can change, so it is worth checking before you go.

Paintball and quad bikes

For anyone wanting more action, Rokiškis has a paintball field. It is for ages 14 and up, with a minimum group of eight. The package includes a mask, camouflage clothing, gloves and a marker, and the number of balls depends on the package you choose.

For younger ones there is a quad bike track for children aged 4 to 12. A foam cannon can be booked as an extra.

Both are booked in advance through the Rokiškis tourist information centre, so this is not a spur-of-the-moment activity but something a group plans ahead.

Discounts apply for companies, schools and camps. Booking and prices are confirmed by the tourist centre, tel. +370 610 00610.

Cycling and hiking

The Rokiškis area is flat and easy going on a bike. The most popular directions are towards Sartai Regional Park and towards Salos Manor on Lake Dviragis.

For more serious hiking there is Sartai Regional Park, with an observation tower at Baršėnai and the Bradesiai campsite, which has a pontoon jetty, fire pits and space for a tent or a camper van.

Bike hire in town is limited, so a group is better off bringing their own. The tourist information centre has the most reliable word on routes and hire options.

What to choose for your group

A quieter group will enjoy Velniakalnis with volleyball and a swim, or the pool with its saunas. A livelier one, especially with teenagers, is best suited to paintball. For a family with small children the most sensible combination is the shallow beach at Velniakalnis plus the pool’s leisure area for a rainy day.

Most of these can be combined into a single day: a morning by the pond, an afternoon at the pool.
